Is “Dooring” Illegal?

The term is ambiguous but if taken to mean opening a door into the path of a cyclist (or pedestrian or other road user) it is illegal in the UK under the Road Traffic Act 1988 and the Road Vehicles (Constructions and Use) Regulations 1986. The 2022 Highway Code instructs a technique called ‘Dutch Reach’ which involves using the left hand to activate the door release mechanism. This will be adopted into the Driving Test. You should never open the door of a vehicle with the intent to injure or endanger other road users.
